support on other support forums

There is a hack for what the author gives support in his own community only. I read that only once but i think that should not be put as the new standard here.

Support should be given here (vb.org) because i (and you either) don't want to register at another community just to get support for one single hack.
Writting a hack and giving support goes together and vB.org is the place for both.

On larger hacks (vbarcade) i can understand it because there's a lot of support to do but in general this should be permitted.

Tell me please what you think about it :)

That all depends on what the hack means to you and what the support for it is worth. I, myself, am weary about releasing anymore hacks here due to all of the warez sites getting them from here and redistributing them. When those sites are in China and Russia, there's not much Jelsoft can do to stop it.

If it is too inconvieneint for you to register on the author's site, then by all means don't. But don't expect them to come here and support it just because they released it here, especially when they state that in their thread. I guess I don't understand what the big deal is to register on the site of a person who wrote a hack that you use for free.

Boffo is right...

on my side, i was to release all my hacks here in vB.org, but for the time being, i just see people replying to the threads without having even tested the hacks... they just complain because it's not answering all their needs... and as i'm not a freelancer, i don't do hacks just for fun. when i release something, it's because a client requested it, and i was able to release it afterward...

we have our own support website, because our site is not only dedicated to vbulletin, but to some other third-party softwares that also have their own support forums...

if i release all my hacks to all these forums, i will have 5 or 6 forums to visit each hours to see if someone request a debug or ask for a change... and i have to tell that these simple hacks are free.. i can't loose all my time visiting other forums just for that...

i understand your point MrNase, but you're on the client side, you don't want yourself to loose your time, but remember that on the coder side, it's the same...

having a single forum to give support i can do more:
1- give specific support for people that really need it
2- answer specific product requests for larger needs than a simple hack
3- make a follow up when a client pay for a job - i can't do that on vb.org

.. yes, this would be cool that Jelsoft spread their identification database, so i can eventually lock your account to your license, so you don't need to register and prove your validity, but for now, there is only vbulletin.com and the german site that have access to this aside of here at vb.org ...

so because of that, most coders release their hacks here, and give support on their own website, because it's easier that way...

remember, even me will not release all my hacks here, because i'm interested in you visiting my site and download my other hacks that may be more interesting... and even see you buy some subscriptions for specific hacks or pay me for a specific job i can do - because we're a team of developpers that build complete solutions for our clients... this is our living!

i agree with mrnase, and i think wayne said it wasn't the shout either, this isn't a site to market services, if you can't be arsed to log back in and give support here, you don't desere to aquire custom via the service that is offered here.

I see your point nexialys but your forums are for selling products also which could be seen as an extra promotion of your paid services.

For an author to release his hack here, it ensures the liceses users can get support from fellow members and the like, however, a popular hack can become hellish to track bugs and problems in a 2000 post thread.

For me, and i think matt as well, we will always do our best to support our hacks here, as well as on our site. :)

Xenon 07-05-2004 04:38 PM

Well, actually we can do this:
Forcing hack authors to give support on their released hacks here on vb.org.

What will be the result? Well, quite easy: a lot of authors won't release their hacks anymore...

Remember, that everyone is giving those hacks out for free. They spend time on them to create them, write the installscripts and so on, for nothing.

So to come to an ending: Nope, we won't change the rules here, as we think it's better to have a lot of hacks for free, even with no support, than having just a few hacks, but with top support.

Also i want to add: This board here is also a users helping users board. We the author doesn't support his hack, du to any reason, i know there are others, which give the helpsearching users a hand or two..
So i don't think that we have a bad situation here...

we as vb.org, can maybe try to come up with a better system for support threads and such (which is already planned, but lack of time is holding us back....)
I hope i can work on that, when i have my holidays in about a month..

yes, this can become a extra promotion for our paid services, and the rules at vb.org are quite explicit... we can't advertise directly about paid services here, so i follow exactly what is written here: https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=53261

also... all the modules/hacks i release here are completely free of any charge, even for support on our main site... and no, my forum is not for selling products... we sell our services... like anyother coder here that answer the Service Requests...

i think your comment is not really calculated, because if you see all the biggest hacks released here and go to their main sites, you'll see that all the coders are doing extra works for a fee... like at vbadvanced, v3arcade, everything vb, etc... they all advertise some free hacks here and release commercial tools on their sites...

anyway... the point was not about services, but spreading the support all around...

I personally am sick of hearing people complain... these hacks are free, be grateful... and IMO the only time you really do have a right to +++++ is when you pay for service, but since vb.org is free, the hacks are free.. stop complaining.

MrNase 07-06-2004 10:38 AM

You are sick of hearing that? Just don't listen to it.

It was something which disturbed me and i just wanted to say that. Nothing more.
