Mod to sell private subforums within main forum?

I am wondering if there is a mod to automate the process of selling a private forum within your main forum. For example if you ran a software forum and wanted to lease private sub-forums to paying software companies. Is there anything like this?

Thanks
Tom

Thats actually illegal within vBulletins EUA

Why is it illegal. All you are doing is leasing an area of your site to another company. You're not selling a copy of vbulletin. Did you mistake my post as saying selling copies of VB? If i'm not mistaken licenses are sold on a per domain basis? So why would they care what you do within your own domain?

Its directly in the license agreement

That's crazy. That's like buying a Honda car and having Honda say you can't give a friend a ride for cash. Can you paste the section where it says this, so I can see if we're on the same page?

I see the section now...

-------------------------
The Software is licensed only to you. You may not rent, lease, sublicence, sell, assign, pledge, transfer or otherwise dispose of the Software in any form, on a temporary or permanent basis, without the prior written consent of Jelsoft.

I understand the idea and thinking behind it, but to me this sounds like they are talking about distributing the entire software to another company. What i'm talking about is running it all on one domain, under one brand, under one management, under one user base and allowing other companies to in a sense moderate their own subforum. What I'm talking about and hiring a forum moderator is basically the same.

So like I said, if it does violate their terms, I think with a detailed letter per their 'written consent' clause would clear things up without a problem.

I understand the need for that statement as a 'blanket' protection clause, but there's also circumstances which they will allow as evident by their statement of allowing exclusion with written consent.

By the way, if i'm not mistaken they mispelled 'sublicense' in their EUA.

We (Jelsoft Enterprises Limited), do not allow what you want to do to be done with our software.

Hate toopen old sores but in regards to your analogy.

If you own a Honda and you use it as a "for Hire" vehicle, you need to pay additional licensing fees to your local DMV. So in essence it's not "crazy".

Now if you happen to set up a forum for a "friend" and it's on your site, who's to say that it isn't your forum...BUT if any legal actions come from any interaction between your "friend" and a poster in regards to content on you "friend's" forum, guess who's liable.

3 things to learn here:
  • Pick your friends wisely
  • Read the license before you buy anything
  • Hondas don't make good "for Hire" vehicles
