Seeking recommendation: Online users, latest posts outside of vBulletin pages?

Hi,

Is there a hack that enables me to list latest threads and online users on my pMachine's Expression Engine powered home page?

I tried using vBindex which for some reason won't work for me.
Problem is with my lacking knowledge of vB's underlying code and missing php programming skills.

Any help is greatly appreciated!
