paid subscription without paying
 
I was wanting to have my users "subscribe" to a private forum, but they couldn't unless the physically clicked the subscription button.. However, I want it to be free and I can't find a way to make that work. I don't want to use a password because that gets around too fast, I want record that a user subscribed to the thread..

How hard of a hack would it be to allow "free subscriptions"?

Public usergroups might accomplish this. its just not under subscription button.

a user could choose to go to a different user group that has permission to that forum??

I didn't know that was possible, that's why I was thinking the subscription idea.
