Question regarding everyone's hacked forums...

I DESPERATELY want to upgrade my board to the latest version. Right now it's running on 2.2.8 :(

Fo those of you whose boards are all sorts of hacked up, how did you upgrade without losing all of your hacks, or some of them? Is there a way to go about doing that?

My forum has a ton of hacks in it, and I truly am just too friggin scared to upgrade it without losing everything a good friend of mine and I have put into it. Some of the hacks are even custom-made!

I hope this is the right section to post it in.. apologies in advance if it's not...

Unfortunately you will lose hacks. That's why I waited so long to upgrade mine. What I would suggest is finding all of the hacks that you have, hopefully you have them written down, and start searching through the forums to see if they have been updated.

The one thing I have noticed about VB3 is that a lot of the hacks I had are much easier to install.

If you're upgrading to the latest version of vB2 then you can do so using a program such as beyondcompare or araxis. They compare the files and highlight differences. Therefore you should be able to keep your hacks :) Always make a backup of your files and database beforehand and shut down your board whilst you do it.

I re-wrote every vB2 hack I had myself for vB3. Obviously thats not an option for most, take a look around, you may find all the import hacks you had for vB2 are now included in vB3 by default or have been ported already. There is also a database conflicts script at vB.com to check if you have any conflicting tables/columns from vB2 hacks that have the same name in vB3.

Take a backup and create a test forum to run the upgrade on first before you think about upgrading your live board.

yep definately make sure you set up a test forum, as i've been unable to get some things to work at all :( so it's worth trying out :D

i'm yet to upgrade myself but that's cos i'm waiting on hacks, everyone else is having fun and i'm now :(

VB3 is far nicer to work with than the older versions. Cut your losses and get back to re hacking your new forums. :)

Plus, a good percentage of your hacks will be default in vB3, saving you some time at least. :)

That's very true. Literally half of my hacks are now included in VB3. I would definately suggest a test forum, too. That's what I'm doing right now.

I'll agree with this, not too mention some of the hacks I had installed were ported after it was allowed here. and most were already integrated.
