How to Remove the Call Home Features of vB 3.0?

Hi! For reasons of performance, security, and personal preference - I would like to eliminate *all* of the Call Home functions of vB 3.0.

What do I need to do in order to accomplish this?

Thanks! :)

If they told you how to do that how would they verify that you are a registerd user and not using a pirated version?

And really only a pirate would want to do this in the first place

Ocean 03-21-2004 05:24 PM

Beermonster, all they have to do to verify that I am a legitimate user is to check my Profile. The same way they can tell for T/S purposes.

Once they've determined that, the question of *who* I am is no longer an issue.

As to your comment that "And really only a pirate would want to do this in the first place", I have to say that that statement was broad in a way that cries out for rebuttal.

People all over the world strongly dislike Call Home features for a variety of reasons. Privacy, security, performance... Why do you think Microsoft was screamed at by the Privacy Groups for their Product Activation "feature"? It's because many people feel that their privacy is their right.

And, perhaps the simplest way for me to rebutt your comment is this:

I am a legal and registered user. I don't want any Call Home "features" in any piece of software I use. Therefore, your statement that "only a pirate would want to do this" is proven wrong.

I can agree with you Ocean, but just like Microsoft's Product Activation, vBulletin's call home features are part of the license agreement with the software developers. Removing these features are like bypassing the activation, which violates the legal bindings incurred by installing the software.

Not exactly true, ria.enigma. The vBulletin License Agreement allows for code modification. If it didn't, this website wouldn't exist, would it? <wink> :)

If I remember correctly, the only modification to code they prohibit is removing the Copyright (and related) text. But other than that, it's free game.

I would have to agree with this one.

I don't really see how it would breech any privacy. So why remove it? All it does is verify your license status, that's it. Nothing more.

You might try asking over at everythingvb.com

they may not know, but at least you won't get insulted, attacked, etc. as per usual here.

and I am with you, I don't like it because when vb.com or under attack or they are having isp issue or anything like that, its a hassle to get in my admin panel.

I think the Admin Panel problem has more to do with the latest version code than anything else. Remove that or comment it out and you won't have the delay issue when they are having problems at vb.com.

On behalf of EvB ...

I personally would not remove the call back, and I dout that any of the other staff would either. If the question was asked there the thread would be moved ;)
