Opensource Hack Communities
 

Well I was wondering seeing alot of hacks being released by individuals, and I was thinking. Why don't we get a very unified development community going on here, where everyone works together and submits ideas, suggestions and codes to improve exisiting systems in the end making it more stable and feature-full.

It seems to be split up and individualised, not really showing the true meaning of teamwork and community.

This is what i am trying to do with the revival of the vB Links Directory system, allow for anyone/everyone to check out the code put in features of their own, and submit it to be incorporated into final, and in the end the author won't be just me, but many others with various areas of expertise causing the system to be greatly stablized, with a wide range of credibility.

It was just an idea I had. What do you guys think.

the major hindrance today for many people contributing hacks to vbb i can make out is.
coz, vbulletin is not free.

i have migrated my forums from ipb to vb.
you must be aware about ibplanet.com making hacks/mods for ipb
they were a very small community 3 months back. BUT now they have grown up extensively. making hacks/mods for ipb.

Jelsoft, must immediately think something about this.
as there are many experts, master minds but do not want to create hacks, as they have to buy vb first.
there must be some sort of rewards to be kept. for hack makers too. which would attract them to make hacks :)

As you can see already IPB 2.0 is going to be out soon, which has almost all the dream features of a complete forums, like VB HAS.

MAJOR ADDON POINT being ->> it is GONNA BE AVAILABLE FOR FREE.
so Jelsoft, please think about this point asap :)

hackers should recieve free licenses?

hackers do these things of their own free will
i mean do you see IPB giving out free licences i mean even the free boards u don't get technical support
and last i seen the reply rate to a request was lack lustre but that doesn't really matter since its free you can't expect anyone to do anything and that also goes for Vbulletin

Actually, on the original idea, Both me (zachery) and link (or squall or matt) work together on most of our projects and weve recently "hired" another person onto our development team.


We are working on both free and paid solutions.

i think its been going well.

I dont think anyone should recive reduced licenses fees unless youve purchased more than 2-3 licenses, like it is now :)

with IPB i think alot of people are kidding themselves if they think ipb will be continue it's free trend, right now they're taking advantage of market instability due to the fact vb3 shipped late, but if this wasn't the case i assure you that they would've announced the end of free ipb-ness a long time ago, however i bet they'll continue to host free boards, as that's quite smart especially using the google add scheme, great business sense :)

as for the the zach/link team, it should be good we should have a few more teams however been that theirs now three of you, where are your products :p

We just bought our new guy on, we are finishing the store (templates and finalzaion of the code) and we will be starting on what the uTT store was designed for :) uTT :)

We may be looking for one more person, but i need to talk it over with Link :) I know our new guy, hes a good coder but has other work / clients as well.

nope i did not meant awarding free licenses first or free licenses later.

What i meant, to say is awarding some sort of prizes to BEST HACK makers.
like we have HACK OF MONTH here taking place EVERY MONTH.

Jelsoft, can award them monetary awards or anything else they find suitable.
Making such awards once a month i guess, wont hamper THE GIANT.

Note-> Thats just making an invitation to the new hackers to find more interest in making nice hacks.
If awards are big. or worth.. more and more nice hacks come around.
making more and more people attracted towards vb :)
