this hack would be perfect for music boards, basically you set the hack to crawl a directory on your computer, it would store that info under your music and if another user was searching for that tune via some sort of search engine that came with this hack they could click a button and they could request it from you, at which point you could accept or decline the request and then if you accept it gives the user information on how to contact you (or if you've got bandwidth to spare it would let you upload the song for the user. basically it would give you a huge file database, you could even set it up to use WinMX's open nap protocol and arrange a time that you'll be on for the user to leech the files :)

anyway random hack idea i came up with, can it be done do you think?

I don't think this would be possible and would be an alternative to filesharing which could land people into a load of trouble.

Very illegal...

surely it would only be a no-no if the songs were licensed what about unlicensed music? that's allowed to shared is it not?

This hack would be heavily abused and basically this would require more non PHP programming than PHP programming.
