Forum Descriptions - Use of ALT tags

I dont know if this has already been done or if this is even possible but I figured Id ask. I am looking to clean up the forums home page and I think I could make it look ALOT cleaner without all the forums descriptions. Id still like to have forums descriptions though so Im wondering if its possible to put an ALT tag on the forums titles or possible put an image in there with an ALT tag for description?

Change the forumhome templates that have the forum links in them and remove $forum[description] and do something like this for $forum[title]

HTML Code:

<span title="$forum[description]">$forum[title]</span>

You'll need to make sure that your forum description doesn't have any " in it.

One more question, is it possible to extend the Forum Description field. I believe its set to 100 character right now and I have an idea of something to do but that field needs to be much larger.
