i found this hack

but itsnt not working, maybe due to my modified member.php file , im just wanting to know if there is a newer /cleaner script for the auto thumbnailing/resizing of an uploaded avatar ? cheers

Why dont you just set the maximum size you want people to be able to use in your admin area?

because if they uplaod an image say 500x400 they get an error instead of the image automatically being reduced for them most people havnt got photoshop and dont know how to resize images to use as avatars

Looks like everyone on that hack thread are getting errors with the mod anyways so it would have been best to avoid it for now. Also they seem to have to install ImageMagick
