Help with GD 2.0 / PHP 4.3

This questions is about a vulletin photo gallery:

This hack seems to be great, but im having a small problem here that I cant seem to fix. To view for yourself, register at www.amidreaming.org/dreamers and try to upload a photo in the control panel "edit photo" area:

I just downloaded the latest GD, and uploaded the files to the /etc/gd directory. I ran the commands in the install file and everything seemed to work fine. There weren't any errors and each command line (configure, make, make install) each apparently did what they were supposed to. But when i went back to try out the photo gallery, the uploading still didn't work.

Right now, everything but the uploading of the photo works. Do you guys have any idea what ive done wrong? Should I install GD into another directory? *clueless*

The latest thing ive done is I installed the latest 4.3 PHP. It's supposed to over write everything and have GD installed already with it. However, after installing it, the same php.ini file was there as before... so i looked in and found that I had to enable the gd.so file. However, there is no gd.so file on my server.

What should I do? Im really quite lost and helpless. Thanks.

if theres a line in the gallery config file asking the path to GD make sure its set right
