Selective "kick" feature

There isn't a hack (or some way I just don't know about) to kick someone off the board immediately, is there? I mean, actually kick a single or multiple ip('s), as in bots, guests, and existing members...just like kicking them out of an irc channel or something. It would be nice to have this feature if there is a way, wouldn't it? Recently, I had the new yahoo engine practically flood me with their "Slurp" bots, despite my robots.txt. I thought it might be nice to just throw them off, ya know? :devious:

What about a temporary ban instead?
The bots would just come back again once you kick them off.

SloppyGoat 07-17-2003 07:55 PM

Well, banning them doesn't remove them. They're still there trying to access everything they can. But that's not really a problem, since I can always just use a no access robots.txt, I guess. However, I also thought it would be nice to just kick a guest off my server, if he/she appears to be trying things he/she shouldn't, ya know? :dead:

What do you mean by "kick off" anyways?

SloppyGoat 07-17-2003 08:51 PM

I meant remove...similar to booting someone off an irc server. I guess that's not really possible without just excluding the ip's from the server completely, though.

Gary King 07-17-2003 08:54 PM

No, it's not possible, that's why I suggested to temporary ban the person instead.

I mean, if you kicked the person off of the server (like in IRC, as you stated) the person could just "rejoin". Just like in IRC, you have to ban, or at least temporary ban, the user.

SloppyGoat 07-17-2003 08:58 PM

Hmmmm. I thought that was kinda like banning them. I don't know that much about irc though.
Hey, what about a way to send a guest a message? Can that be done somehow? Wouldn't it be nice to be able to send them a popup or something? "What do you think you're doing?" LOL

It is not possible to kick anybody due to the HTTP protocol nature: as soon as all of the content on a page is finished downloading, the connection to the server is broken.

Actually, I was thinking about this. It could be done by making code that would block their IP in the .htaccess file. You know...something integrated into vB that would allow you to just add a user/guest to the block list instantly.
