no birthdays before 12-31-1969

For some reason bdays before dec 31st 1969 show up as 31-12-1969 in people's profile. The database itself and the admin panel show the right date though (e.g. 10-04-1949). Would this indicate a problem with a php file or what? I'm clueless why it shows the correct data for anything after 1969, but not before..
