Customfield Max. Character Limit?

Is there a way to get rid of the Max. of 250 characters and set it to 2500?

I stepped into my database and changed it there, but that doesn't help, this field still gets truncated at 250.

What do I need to do to get it so that I can use a field for 2500 characters.
