2.3.0 to VB3, Is it worth upgrading?

Just wondering, from what I've heard upgrading to VB3 from 2.3.0 or a later 2.2.x version will not really be an option since the code is going to be a lot different.

Is this true? I'm sure some of you compulsive hackers realize how much time we have all put into our boards, and the thought of doing that all over again does not sound fun at all.

I just upgraded to 2.3.0 today using a side by side file comparison program, which took me maybe an hour tops and I was able to keep all of my modifications, but when I hear things like VB3 is going to be completely recoded from the 2.2.x/2.3.0 series, it makes me wonder if it's going to be worth it to upgrade, let alone if it is going to be possible. I mean if the files are 90-100% different, you can immagine the frustration..

Obviously there will be some feature enhancements, but I've personally added a TON to my board. Many of these things that I've done I am not sure if they will work on VB3.

It just makes me wonder if it's worth the time and effort.

What do you guys think about this?

well read through the vb3 discussions here and on vb.com
there are a lot of users which want to wait until all of the hacks they use are ported over.
some want to update immediately....

it depends really on yourself

I'm planning to wait until more vB3 hacks arrive ;)

Most vB2 will not work for vB3 so it depends on how much you depend on these hacks and how able you are to port them over to vB3.

i dunno personally ive got a plan for my copy of vb3..

tho i wont be updating a 2.2x board that is hacked to it..
due to it being probs near impossible and the length of time it may take for hacks etc

tho i have to say a few folk will probs not need to wrry as from the fearure list ive seen vb3 will be packed so many wil be able to run it without hacks to achieve what they maybe had before

Thanks guys. I have over 70 hacks installed now, some which are very extensive, so I don't think I will be upgrading unless some security issues arise. :) Or like some of you said, until I can port over a majority of the way my board works now, which is nothing close to the original code...

A lot of the hacks I have installed are small enough not to be too much trouble to port over, I hope.
Also I'm expecting some of the new functions of vB3 will take the place of some of the hacks I have installed!

I guess I'll only know when it's on my test site :D

:p I've just decided not to upgrade to vB3 -- there are a lot of extra features that I don't find particularly useful. However, I hear the amount of queries went down in vB3 quite a lot .. so I'm stuck.

I'm going to upgrade once I have modified the code and database structure for my addons to work with vB3 (I depend heavily on my addons). I'll have to tinker with the install file too, because I don't want to do all the isht manually once I've upgraded. I suppose I'll just run a test board elsewhere and modify it to my satisfaction, then proceed with switching it over to my main forums. I figure once everything's in place on the test board, it will take maybe an hour tops to do my thang.

Another thing that's important for hackers to consider is waiting for vB3 Gold because you'll probably need to do file hacks over and over and over and over and over (like the energizer bunny kinda), and of course the new vB3 style is coming with Gold.
