Just want a simple banner
 

I am quickly learning how all this different stuff works (I used ftp for the first time today to edit our webpage and it worked fine) but I simply cannot figure out how to do this one. I have searched and searched but because my knowledge of the lingo is very limited I don't know if I am lokoing at the right things or understanding things right. Sooo, I need some help.

I simply want to put a centered banner it the top of my main forums page that a member can click on and it takes them to that site (I'd also like a second one at the bottom too if possible). I think I need to modify the header template BUT I have no clue how to even go about doing this, what to add, what to type, etc. I have a php book on order but would like to get this done as I am overseas with my military husband and mail takes FOREVER.

Basically I am scared to death to do anything. I attempted the "Remove Moderator's Column Hack" today by Saintdog and it didn't work for me at all except to make the column narrower and I did it twice so obviously I am missing something.

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

I got the banners up late last night with a "tutoring session" from my server guy. Looks easy to me but then I am not on his end doing all the work. He simply changes the styles and made it so I can easily change the header and footer banners manually.
