Disallow Registration by Minors

This is a simple one that gives an error screen if somebody under the age of 18 tries to register. Of course, it doesn't prevent them from lying.

Does it matter if Coppa is enabled or disabled when using this?

edited. I see, it changes Coppa to 18 instead of 13.

Keep Coppa enabled. It does not display the COPPA registration form though - it shows an error form that says they are not allowed to register.

Very nice. Thanks, Amy! Unfortunately my forum won't quite need this yet. But it's a very good possibility we might in the near future. :D

As with all your hacks, great! :D

It's good. But what's to stop them from just pressing the back button and re-submitting...

amykhar 03-21-2003 08:30 PM

Nothing a-drive. It just makes a point that the place isn't really kid-friendly.

:) Ok cool.

Add in a ban feature, when they sign up as a minor, it logs the IP and bans them, so they can't re-submit :p

Exactly! I was thinking of using a cookie, but IP banning might be more effective.

That wouldn't be a great idea for several reasons:

1. What happens if they make a mistake and type the wrong date.

2. Most people under the age of 18 don't really own there own IP address it is there parnets connection so what happens if they might want to sign on?

3. What happens when the grow up and become 18 they will mostlikly still be banned

I believe the best way if you want to make sure no one under 18 gets in you get into one of those programs that ask for credit card numbers or something.

Lastly I belive the law only requires that you just have a message that says you have to be 18 years or older to visit the site. So really this hack is good at least you look like your taking steps to get young pople out.

A quite naive hack ...
