The Philosophy of Hanging out at Vbulletin.com and Vbulletin.org and even VBT

Another conversation starter. How do you feel about people who publish hacks or offer support on the Vbulletin boards but who do not provide a link to their own board?

I have always felt a mild distrust towards the people who do not proudly display their site because I see it as sort of their resume. If their board is buggy or bad, I am not as likely to have faith in code they release.

Now, I understand people have a variety of reasons for not publishing thier links and I am not asking anybody to defend that choice. This is just a conversation starter on people's perceptions about the more "secretive" board admins.

Perhaps it also has something to do with the fact that pirates seldom have links to their boards in their profiles. I know the permission system means that anybody releaseing hacks isn't a pirate now, but there is still a bit of distrust remaining.

Well sometimes it's the fact people register to someones board, just to pm the admin about a problem of a hack or something like.

i already had such users...

also some admins have a special group of customers and don't want to see theri board in public then..

all in all i don't care about making a board viewable by users or not :)

I think little of people who don't link to their board in their profile, although I know of exceptions (ex: I know why Erwin doesn't have his).

Also there are license issues which I'm tired of discussing but are related to that www button.

Xenon, I don't usually get people registereing to complain about my hacks. Instead, once in a blue moon somebody registers and asks me how to install somebody else's hack. A significant percentage of my incoming hits have always come from vbulletin sites. Of course, that percentage is much lower now that Google is bringing me so many visitors. (Bless you Filbert)

well most of the time, the problems are because of they have missed something in the installfiles....

all in all my board is german, so i don't get that much users from vb.org or com sites ;)

I actually used to read and speak German quite well. But once I learned Arabic, I started to forget my German. So you are safe from me Xenon ;)

I have to ask...what did Filburt help you do to attract Google users?

NTLDR 03-16-2003 06:26 PM

At the end of the day I can see why many users don't have links to there sites, it generates sign-ups for users who never intend to return. Also users of boards which cover controversial topics or are used within a private company or for members only.

At the end of the day, I'll check the code I'm adding for anything I don't like. Everyone has a right to privacy and many people probably want to keep there site seperate from anything they do here.

What doesn't Filburt do to help out his fellow vB community, especially when that community has a female representative? :p

Boofo, he posted a simple template mod at the .com site that allowed google bots to crawl the forum. I added a wee bit of hacking to improve upon things and get quite a bit of google traffic now.
