Hacks requirement

All this upgrading chat to vB3 made me wonder about heavily hacked sites.
What about an uninstall file, I mean, for hacks to be moved into Full Releases Forum, a uninstall script must be included, otherwise, It gets dumped into the Beta Forum, the non approved hacks by vB.org Team, sort of speak.
So, whatcha think? :bunny:

hmm, we are planning a new system for hack releases and so on, and i think it's a good point you made here :)

we'll discuss about it :)

It wouldn't be such a bad idea to apply this to hacks that require db modifications.
Thanks for listening Xenon :knockedout:

IMHO, an uninstall script is useless. All it can do is drop database tables and templates. It can't unmodify files. Anybody who is hacking their board should know how to remove a template and drop a table.

True, but an un-install file would still be useful, because they're are still people around who don't know how to do these things. File edits are easy to revert. And tables too... :paranoid: I don't know where I'm going with this.... :p

I guess my point is that forcing contributors to pander to non-contributors and increasing our workload is something I cannot endorse. If "official" hacks have to be newbie-friendly, I am not interested in releasing them.

I think it was you who mentioned it? ... Did you ever get anywhere with your idea of a serious hackers forum? :)

Xenon 03-13-2003 02:05 PM

@amy: scripts which have a install script for installing templates and so on should have also an unsinstall script.

i didn't mean each hack should have a complete uninstallscript also.
drop commandos should be wellknown by hackers, and even if not it's jsut 2 lines to add as an info into install files ;)

A whole new revamped Hack Release system is being formulated and should be released soon. :)

Sounds interesting Erwin, I look forward to it :). Maybe you could tell us a little about it first though? ;).
