Aarrgghhh... my hard disk at home died...

This morning when I switched on my computer I got the dreaded message:

Disk read failure. Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to restart.

After much checking, I found that my 10 Gb hard drive which is only 2 years old has died. It is a Samsung hard drive that came with my computer.

I have lost 2 years worth of site updates and study notes and essays. :( Also 2 years worth of saved emails, saved PMs, documents and collection of images. Thank God I have an old 1 Gb slave drive with some information on it, so all is not totally lost.

I had to go out and buy myself a new hard disk (80 Gb Seagate) and just installed it, and reinstalled Windows XP. I could not retrieve any data off the old hard disk. It has well and truly died.

As such, I will be reinstalling software over the next 2-3 days, and won't be online much. Also, I am starting work again tomorrow - my 1 month vacation is finally over.

Anyway, just letting you all know. Always back up important data!!! Thank God my ADSL internet connection still works!!!

How I hate how these things happen.

Good luck getting everything back to normal! :)

Ahhh this has to be the worst thing that could happen to anyone - i'm getting an external hardrive soon and plan on making a back-up every night :)

Nothing like good quality hardware.

Indeed...

@Erwin - I'd suggest writing your site info to a CD-RW...

Perhaps get InCD - It allows you to treat a CD-RW as a massive Floppy Drive - That way you can dump all your site stuff onto it:)

Too true. Let's just say I should have known... don't use Samsung hard disks... :) I couldn't recover anything. This hard disk is only 2 years old. My 5 year old 1 Gb Fujitsu still works fine.

I now have an 80 Gb Seagate - it's not the best brand around, but it was great bang for bucks - only US$95 (AU$185). :)

I've had 3 total crashes (2 on my own comp, 1 on my dad's) and got fed up with it. Now I run 2 80gig Maxtor drives in a RAID 1. There's NO way they are gonna screw me by crashing at the same time...

Sorry to hear that, Erwin. I had that happen a couple of years ago. It was a mess.

When I upgraded this system, I got 2 IBM Deskstar 120 GB hard drives and I use Drive C for Windows and drive D for all my other stuff (vBulletin, hacks, upgrades to software, etc.) 2 hard drives is the only way to go. ;)
