Over 5000 emails sent reporting errors

My site is sending me thousands of emails reporting

Database error in vBulletin :
Link-ID == false, connect failed
mysql error: Too many connections
mysql error number: 1040

First... how do I stop it? It almost 6000 emails in the last two hours.

What do I change to make it stop reporting errors?

Check the Trouble Shooting forum at vBulletin.com there is a sticky there by Steve Machol which explains the error.

You need to increase the number of database connections allowed on your server. Edit your admin/config.php and set use persistent connection to "0". Then edit your php.ini or get your host to increase database connections.

I suspect your forums has become too busy for your current host. Time to go dedicated. :)

We were encountering the same problems... with ADDR.com

Switched over to venturesonline.com and viola... problem solved.

Well something similar to this just happened to me... only that I only got around 1200 emails and my server was only down for around 5 minutes... (I was making some configuraiton changes).

My question is this:

Is there an addon/hack that will PREVENT vbulletin from sending ERROR email after a certain number? after the 50th email, I think I'll get the point and go fix the problem, no need for 5000 ;-)

Carnage540 02-10-2003 07:19 PM

Yeah, i had that happen to me before. Some idiot kept refreshing over and over again for sh!ts and giggles i guess.....Need to get a hack that says something like "Check back in a bit" or whatever.....You can also edit your admin/config.php and change the webmasters address to like "blah@blah.com" till it gets fixed, i think,
