only thread starters may reply in that thread hack
 
my forum is starting a "journal" type section where senior members will start thier own thread and solely have access to that thread so they can post updates to stuff going on in thier lives

any help?

you can do that in your admincp:

Forumpermissions > Edit Forumpermissions of senior member usergroup in that forum
Set "Can reply to other's threads" Setting to no ;)
