Does anyone know how to tweak the number of registered members?

or

is there a way to stop the Registered Members from showing on the front page.

Just look for Registered Members in the forumhome template and remove it or put your own number in there.

Actually it was this line that needed to be removed:

Registered Members: <B>$numbermembers</B>

also , you can disable it by change it to :

<!-- Registered Members: <B>$numbermembers</B> -->

try it :D
