There could be many reasons, but most likely because your host has strict limitations in place for the MySQL server that you're running vBulletin on. "MySQL server has gone away" doesn't show up on properly configured and optimized MySQL servers.

hello dave so should I change MySQL or stay with current? if this problem arises again, what should I do?

For this error you should contact your hosting company and tell them that you sometimes receive the "MySQL server has gone away" error, there's not really anything that we can do to provide further assistance.
