New post numbers

I recently had a bit of an upgrade which worked well but for some reason when we log on and read the new posts for the day the number doesn't diminish. Ie you read 20 posts of 40 new posts and when you click onto Home it still shows as 40 new posts.

Eventually I click onto the mark forum read option but I'd like to know how to get it fixed?
