Permission for a file

For one of our sites we want to make it so only our customers in the customer usergroup can download some certain files directly.

We want them to be able to access domain.com/forum/file and be able to only download it when logged into the forum/auth'd etc.

What is our best way of going about this?

OR

Simply make forum with correct permissions and upload the files as attachments and let the members download.
