These are generally safe but they are use at your own risk. When we are informed about a security risk we generally quarantine a mod which sends an email to everyone who has downloaded it, but we can't promise you won't get hacked. You should do your own due diligence. If a mod author just joined, has no other mods, and very little discussion you may want to hold off installing the mod. If the mod has been out for years and there is lots of discussion about it, it is probably safer. However if it is a huge mod adding a lot of functionality it is also more likely the author missed something than a small mod that does one thing.

You should check yourself from time to time you are using the latest version of any mods you do install.
