vb3.7.1 to 4.2.3 help please

hi all, we have been running for years the forum is currently running 3.7.1 but we would like to upgrade to 4.2.3 or may higher but we have a licence for 4.2.3.

i have a few questions

1. can we upgrade only or can we do a fresh import
2. its got 2gb of pictures and 1.5gb of attachments

ive searched but cant see what i need but if theres a tut that would be cool

regards mick

Yes you can upgrade but you will lose your plug ins and your theme.

What ever you do be sure to do a complete back up first. The safest method is to create a clone/test version of your site and try the upgrade there first.

Upgrading from vBulletin 3 to 4 shouldn't be a problem. I've done it a couple of weeks ago.

Like RichieBoy67 said, most plugins will break and all of your themes will definitely not work anymore.

thanx guys really appreciate that ive got total access to everything and im not a total newb:D:D

been working on xf and thats far more harder than vb lol

prob ive got is the db is so big, i can ask the host to duplicate elsewhere on the server as the last time i tried to import it via ssh it crashed out

can i reimport the theme?
is 4.3.2 fb intergrated or is there a addon to download??
and also does 4.2.3 resize to all platforms like xf??

sorry thats probably a swear word here pmsl:):):):):)

all advice and help is always greatly received guys regards mick:up:

You can not re-import the theme, a vBulletin 3 is made for vBulletin 3, not for vBulletin 4. :)
Facebook is integrated indeed.
vBulletin's theme is not responsive, you'll have to buy a responsive theme for that somewhere.

thx dave so your saying a reponsive skin will resize platforms??

we have a custom look to our 3.7 skin and a banner manager and some external custom php pages which incorp the 3.7 skin, so we would need that work doing

i could possibly do some myself but would need the skin doing this is the forum take a look dave

you know of any skin customisers??? its a way off yet but maybe a possiblitily, also you mentioned the plugs ins wont work i dont think we have many anyways

By the way if you have a lot of user attachments on your boards you probably want to wait for 4.2.4 to come out as there's a nasty bug in 4.2.3 where attachments on your board get deleted when they shouldn't be due to corrupt data in the filedata table, specifically the refcount column. 4.2.3 does not corrupt the data, but since it fixes the cron job that deletes unused filedata the existing corrupt data will be removed.

ok need some additional help please

ive tried the 4.1.5 and couldnt get it to work, i also took an exact image of the current db and files and cant get that working either in my offline copy, i tried online on another part of the server and get the same error is it because the php is newer on the other part of the server??

ok so is there a tutorial or a post that i can refer to the upgrade too?

ive also checked and cant find in the php script why im getting the error

the error is banner.txt is missing when its not and is present

many thanx mick

in addition what url to i use to upgrade? just www.****.org/upgrade

--------------- Added [DATE]1450129642[/DATE] at [TIME]1450129642[/TIME] ---------------

ok managed to get all working but dont want to upgrade till i change the albumpicture database is there somewhere in the acp or a file i can change the database as im using the same localhost and it may corrupt the original which i cant take the chance on

all help is appreciated thanx again mick

Changing vb3.7.1 to 4.2.3 is a good decision, you don't need to care more on theme because vb4.2x theme is always better than vb 3.7.1

But keep in mind that to keep your traffic from search, you can need do the redirection for your old/new URLs so it will be broken on search engines. Because as I know then it has difference between url structure of vb 3 and vb4.
