This request, I imagine, would be relatively simple. What I want is for people to be able to check their username is available prior to completing the registration form. From experience, I know there's nothing more annoying in filling in a rather detailed registration form only to be told afterwards your name has been taken > click "Back" > and the form is empty and they have to start all over again.

If the name is taken in the database, they should be given the opportunity to check again. If the name is available, they should be taken to the registration form where the username is passed, ideally as a hidden field so they don't change it!

Anyone upto to the task? :D I'm sure anyone with even a moderately busy board would find this hack useful.
