Automating Followup Emails on Signup

Does anyone know if there is a way to build and schedule a series of automated followup emails once a user signs up via vBulletin? With version 4 we utilized the MailChimp plugin which sync'd our vBulletin users with our MailChimp mailing list and we were able to do it that way. Right now, it's all manual, which is a mess.

Or, does anyone know of a way we can sync our users to a mailing list provider, like MailChimp, in vb5?
