Backup/Restore options

What are y'all using for backing up your site? I tried a plain copy of the root folder and sub directories but being in a windows computer I have problems with folders named the same since windows dont care for upper/lower case. Seems there are about 4 gigs....
Please, go easy on this newbie....

What is your host and server?

goodhunting1 07-08-2015 01:09 PM

They have godaddy. What info do you need from the server?

Server Type Linux
Web Server Apache
PHP 5.3.24

is that what you needed?

Skyrider 07-08-2015 02:32 PM

Just 2 cents. Be informed that php 5.3.x is E.O.L (end of life), and highly recommended to use php 5.4 and above. Seeing the latest vB4 update is not compatible with 5.3

so I have to ask my host to upgrade or is that something I have to do myself?

Skyrider 07-08-2015 04:42 PM

Not sure how godaddy handles things, and I have no idea what type of server you have (shared, vps or dedicated). Best to google around or ask godaddy.

As for being on-topic. How do you connect to the server, FTP?

goodhunting1 07-08-2015 06:29 PM

we connect with ftp. If I have to guess I am sure this is a shared server but I will check with the account owner, if not I will check with go daddy.

Mind sharing which directories are exactly duplicates? (upper/lower cases), because I made tons of file backups by putting them on my HDD (windows) without any problems. As far as I know, vBulletin by default has no duplicate upper/lower directories.

goodhunting1 07-08-2015 09:13 PM

we have 2 folders nam stuff, one is Stuff and other is STUFF. I am sure the one named STUFF is not from the initial install as no other folder that I have seen is all in upper case. Actually, I dont see any other folder capitalized either. Both have pictures in it. I will later on figure out where are these pictures used and consolidate those 2.
So, will a back up to my hd in my windows machine works as good as in a static page site? Has anyone restore from such folder without any problems?
I was hopping that maybe there is a software that could do differential backups instead of total backups all the time.

Thanks!

Looks like where images are being stored from your forums ie a custom folder you can find out what one is being used in the admincp for attachments then transfer from one folder to the folder that is being used and delete the folder that is not being used but do make a backup first
