How do you add a user profile field when installing a plugin?

How do you program a plugin to automatically add a user profile field when it is installed?

This question was asked for vB3 but never answered, https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=138839.

I would be equally happy with an answer that suggests an existing product that does this. I'll be able to figure out from there.
