Looking for a mod to use email address for logins
In the last month one of my forums has been getting an inordinate amount of bots attempting to hack any account they can on the forum for the purposes of sending PM spam in the event they are able to crack one. Since usernames on the forum are easy to find and email addresses associated with those accounts are hidden, forcing use of the email address will solve this issue. Blocking IP addresses is not a solution because there are too many different IPs being used. I'm willing to pay for a modification if necessary.

If you're willing to edit a file, you can try this: edit file includes/function_login.php, and around line 170 is this code:
Code:
array($callback, 'callback'), where the word 'username' has been replaced with 'email' (in red, scroll to the right). I only spent a minute or two testing it, but the only problem I found was that when you go to the admincp or modcp (assuming you're one of those), it puts the user name in the "User Name" box, so you have to change it to your email address to log in. |
