Installing the best style or creating one and installing the best mods/hacks for your site will depend a lot on what your forum's main topic is. I would say install things relevant to your topic, for obvious reason you are not going to have a mp3 player functionality for a business forum unless its a music business forum and so on. That is a pretty broad question you are asking. It would really depend on what your content is.

If you look at the largest, most populated and busiest boards, they all have really simple, clean styles that aren't lurid, gaudy or garish, and are light in kb load. Therefore they load very fast.

The real question you need to ask is - am I looking for a style I like, or one that most people will like. Am I feeding my own ego or am I keeping the membership in consideration.

Additionally - embrace mobile or die. Most of the browsers that will be visiting your site are going to be mobile browsers today.

Max is right. The larger boards all run a style that most members can deal with. Some things to keep in mind:

1. Having a lot of graphics will slow the site down and for some people who do not have fast internet connections or fast PC's it will be a problem for them to view your site therefore in a lot of those cases you may lose them as members if you have a graphic heavy skin(s).

2. A lot of people cannot see on a dark skin. It's hard for them to read light text on a dark background so if you want a dark skin for your site then you might consider having 2 skins one light & one dark.

3. Make sure the skin makes sense with your content. Obviously you are not going to have icons that represent Dr. Pepper if you are running a Coca-Cola site.

If the site is a gaming site then you might be able to bypass the first thing above since most people who are on a gaming site probably expect a graphic heavy skin.

And in this case make sure all your graphics type images are OPTIMIZED.
