Re-use the strike system

I'm trying to figure out how I can re-use the 5 strike login system for a slightly different purpose. I created an image based captcha system which works well but could majorly benefit from the strike system (therefore bots couldn't just keep clicking until it got it correct). How do I tap in to this?

I don't understand it enough to explain it or to know if you can reuse it, but look in includes/functions_login.php for the functions with "strike" in the name.
