.co.uk Domain Authority

Hello,

I'll appreciate the help of UK Members or those who're dealing with .co.uk domain names.

Some days ago I've registered a .co.uk domain name via my registrar that I'm using for international domain names (.com, .net, .org etc). A few days later I got 2 emails from http://www.nominet.org.uk/ asking me to login in their site (with premade login details) and update my personal data. In addition (that it was that scared me more) they're asking me to upload scaned copies of my passport and other private documents.

What I want to know is, if Nominet.org.uk is an official (Goverment) authority and if I'm obligue to give such details, or it's another marketing site.

THank you

From what I've seen on other domain registrars, many link to nominet.co.uk as an official guide to .co.uk domain names SO I assume they are officially tied into it and if so it makes perfect sense how they had your details.

I would go back to your registrar and check their fine print and such when on such purchase pages (emulate purchasing another .co.uk domain just don't complete the purchase and I'm sure something a popup or info box will be present mentioning nominet somewhere along the way).

https://support.godaddy.com/help/art...te=uk#registry
https://help.fasthosts.co.uk/app/ans...d-restrictions
http://www.nominet.org.uk/uk-domain-...ain-name/rules

On both GoDaddy's page and Fasthosts page they both mention and link to nominet for certain things, for example on Godaddy's page click on https://support.godaddy.com/help/art...ite=uk#privacy and it specifically mentions it.

So I'm going with YES you need to complete your account and setup on nominet website as it seems pretty official when all other domain registrars and telling you that certain things must be done via nominet ;).

@TheLastSupportman

Thank you so much for the geart info and the time that you spent for finding them. To be honest I still have a doubt, not about my details (name, address etc), but about the scaned passport. Actually this is something illegal at least for our Laws. Sending copy of passport to any non Goverment department (any country doesn't matter) or Financial institute (like PayPal or any Bank), is strictly prohibited.

Then don't register a .co.uk domain.

If I register or not is my own decision and I don't like smarty answers and/or comments. My questions was clear: Is it Goverment Authority or not? That's all that I asked.

And as I can see in my 100+ domains that I've registered, there are another 4 .co.uk domain names that I've registered and never asked me something like this. Same for .de, .no, .it and .fr domains.

So, I'll appreciate if your reply can stay in my request only:
  1. Is this site something similar like Icann?
  2. Does anybody knows if they'll remove the domain if I don't send the copy of my passport. This is something that I asked them on Friday and still haven't got any reply.
Thank you

<a href="https://support.godaddy.com/help/article/5854/about-uk-domain-names" target="_blank">https://support.godaddy.com/help/art...k-domain-names</a>

nominent is the domain authority.

^ I thought they were. Remember sometimes new domains come out that were not out before, I believe in this situation since it deals with UK being in the actual domain that is why a UK based company is in charge, heck they might have lead the forefront in making .co.uk available around the world - I'm not sure but would make sense.

Edit: Ohh and you're welcome Nick it didn't take too much time I was simply trying to be helpful :D.

.co.uk, .org.uk are available to the world at least for 3 years now. The new .uk (just .uk) lunched some months ago are available only to UK residents.

The intention to help is what counts more than the time, and this is that I appreciate mostly.

Thank you

Not really a very helpful response.

Nominet are the official body for UK domains.
In theory you must supply proper contact details, nothing more.

I have many .co.uk domains, and have never done all of that for any of them, they have a name, address and e-mail, thats all they need, and all they get.

(I have never logged into the nominet site, any details are what I supplied at registration).

Nominets own rules state ;

Quote:

[You must] give and keep us notified of your correct name, postal address and any phone, fax or e-mail information and those of your contacts (if you appoint any, see condition 5.2). This duty includes responding quickly and correctly to any request from us to confirm or correct the information on the register;

Thank you for the info Paul,

Most probably the reason is that you're a UK citizen, while in my records they seen a different country.

The first sentence in their email was:
Quote:

Unfortunately we have been unable to validate the registrant details that you have provided for the domain name as you have provided name details that we have been unable to automatically identify against public data sources.
I don't know what public data sources they meant, but they're clear about the need of a copy of my passport. Finally I found a semi-way and they accepted it, while I was still ok with our laws. Instead to send them a photocopy of my active passport I found and sent them a photocopy of my passport which has expired at 2012. Finally they wanted just to check my Name and Country.
