How to stop animated GIFs with transparent backgrounds getting a white BG in thumbs?

I used to host a MyBB forum for quite a while. Now I've decided to move to vBulletin. Riddled with errors and bugs, but I had my reasons. :P Anyway...

(This is the normal avatar.)

I'd rather ask about this as a last resort rather than ditch my avatar. I get a white background problem on my profile and the activity section. I gather that vBulletin does not store any thumbnail images, so I can't just edit the thumb directly. Any way past this? Sure, I could ignore it, but it looks so damn ugly if I do that.

Use ImageMagick instead of GD as your AdminCP > Settings > Options > Image Settings > Image Processing Library. You will need to ask your host for the Image Binary Path or ImageMagick will NOT work.

Are you saying your site is now riddled with errors and bugs or vBulletin 4?

I figured the solution might be ImageMagick. I've used it in the past locally through scripts, but I'm not sure about DreamHost. I'll look into this, thank you.

Both? I mean no offence. MyBB is much cleaner, but a certain plugin I seriously wanted to use in my relaunch is only available on vBulletin, and it's quite advanced with a MyBB port probably costing a lot of money. My main problem with vBulletin is how terrible the ACP is. It's so easy with MyBB to access anything I want in seconds. I'm sure you'd say I should have gone with vBulletin 3. Maybe so, but I'm pretty sure that wasn't an option when I purchased a license, and since I assumed it was probably the best option (other than vB5, ew) as suggested by the vBulletin site, 'guess I'm stuck with it now. :)

I do like vBulletin. It stands on its own merits despite the flaws. My main beef is with the ACP. It's an eyesore, and don't get me started on searching for things in the options. I'd hope there are mods that fix the ACP but haven't looked yet.

Did you know you can select (in the AdminCP > Settings > Options area) to Show All Settings and then just use your browser search on the page? Using vB3 wouldn't have helped much if your problem is with the admincp since it really hasn't changed at all since vB3.

I'm aware of that, but often the settings you want are blanketed in sections that aren't described as well. Still, I don't think generating a massive page of settings is the right way to mask poor design. I mean no offence. It's just how I see it.

Becoming more familiar with the acp will help you be more comfortable with it.

Yeah it can seem a bit overwhelming at first, but once you get use to it, it is easy. :)

At the risk of being called something really bad because I stepped in and went off topic, are there benefits and what are the pros & cons of using ImageMajick over GD?

Lynne 08-09-2014 11:30 PM

ImageMagick supports more file types than GD. If you have access to ImageMagick, then it is suggested that you use it.
