Images (linked to/uploaded) shown with wrong orientation

Sometimes, but not always, when a member submits a post with an image (whether or not the images are added as an attachment or linked to with an image tag, doesn't matter), the orientation of the image in the post is off. The image in the post may be sideways or upside-down.

As an example, the image in this link is correctly oriented:
http://www.nidhog.com/~jamie/Challenge/Kefir%202.JPG

However, when it is linked to in a post, it is turned 90 degrees (2nd image down):

In addition to submitted posts, this also happens with Avatars and images uploaded to a 3rd party gallery (DragonByte Gallery). This seems to happen with pictures taken/uploaded with a mobile device.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again.

^That's the image that I linked to in the original post here. The image orientation is off at my site AND at vbulletin.org, too.

What's going on here? Any ideas?

Ok, and to make things weirder, when visiting the image link at the top of this post on a laptop the orientation is correct:
http://www.nidhog.com/~jamie/Challenge/Kefir%202.JPG

However, when I visit that exact same image link on my phone, the orientation of that image is off:

Phones, and some browsers/etc will respect that setting in the meta data. But it the actual picture is as displayed.
