Loop when user downloads file but is not logged in.

When my users go to a link/post with a download and try downloading without logging in, the site redirects them to login. This is fine. However, when they log in they get stuck on the "redirecting" page in that the site tries to redirect them back to the page/post they were on but gets stuck. Then, every time the user tries to get back to the page by clicking the link on the redirect button it reinitiates the download. This behavior occurs in both IE and Chrome.
Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.
