Least Intrusive PM Notification System?

I'm looking for a least intrusive notification setting for PMs for my vBulletin v4.2.2 board. The default notification system will not do, I got three popups for one PM and I couldn't browse the site without clicking through every single PM. I'm looking for something to alert people that they have a PM without disrupting their browsing.

I want people to know they have a PM but I do not want to interrupt their browsing session. They should know they have a PM, but they shouldn't have to drop everything to check it out.

Change your userprofile setting. Under general settings the in the PM section turn off the PM popups. The other reason you get the popup more than once is if you go to a page get the popup click a link and then click the back button. To avoid this after getting the popup refresh the page and then start clicking links.

I have PM popups turned off. Because on Chrome I sent a test message to myself, hit refresh on my admin account, and had three popup windows for one PM. The biggest problem being that I could not continue browsing until I clicked past all of the prompts.

If you have your PM popups disabled then you likely have a plugin you're using that is causing the behaviour, disable all plugins and see if you still get the behaviour.

In config.php uncomment the disable hooks like at the top to disable all modifications.
