Like-a-Lot

Yeah, I know. This is not earth shattering, nor especially important. It's just something that bugs me. And you know how I am when it's late at night, and something bugs me...

The like button (which uses a heart, which I would think would mean more love than like, but who am I to address such philisographical questions?) It's great. I prefer it to reputation. But it appears it's built, or at least modeled, on the old reputation system. Which wouldn't let you rep the same person twice in a row. Seems to me that's inherently the opposite of what a Like system is supposed to accomplish. Am I crazy? Don't answer that. -_-

Yeah it is built on the rep system, so unfortunately, you can not like the same person without liking a few others first. Sometimes it can be quite annoying.

I want to Like your post, but I'm afraid I won't be able to Like it later.

CharlieDelta 10-11-2013 02:15 AM

Completely agreed. I find it annoying as hell. I dislike the like. Wait! Damn now I won't be able to dislike again till next week.

It is intentionally set that way, and is quite a low limit.
It stops intentional abuse of the system and also encourages you to look beyond one person.
If you are only liking the posts of one person all the time then you should probably look at why.

ozzy47 10-12-2013 01:23 AM

That does make sense, I have seen like / dislike systems abused before. But on the other hand, if a member is getting all his help from another member, then it would only stand to reason that he would be liking only his posts.

I guess it is just fine the way it is though. :)

Just out of curiosity, how can the Like system be "abused"?

On the board I oversee I stopped most of the 'Liking' stats, as I could see a pattern of different groups automatically 'Liking' their own group messages. In fact I enacted an algorithm to allow them to 'Like' upon certain criteria: It has cut out most of the nonsense.

Interesting Topic :)

People going round just liking every post by someone.

Digital Jedi 10-12-2013 07:06 PM

So this is calculated somewhere? I thought it was just arbitrary liking, like on Facebook.
