Replace username with an image

I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to change usernames to images?
I have been able to accomplish this largely using the replacement variable however that is problematic given some usernames are commonly used within the forums.

I was hoping there is a method similar to html markup method or perhaps a mod which offers this?
Any advice in this area would be appreciated.
