best version of 4.x to upgrade to?

I am currently running 3.8.7, and would like to migrate this database to a new install of of 4.x, but I don't know what is the best version to go to. I don't like how 5.x looks so I'd like to avoid it if possible...

Any input would be greatly appreciated

The most current version of 4 would be best. Each version is an improvement. 4.2.1 is very stable and has a far more modern look than 3.8, IMO. You'll love it!
