Bright red fonts over a dark background ...
 

Is it just me or don't ya hate trying to read text on a site with bright red fonts over a dark background !

Whenever I come to a site with such I immediately click the back button to get away from it. Mostly because I know the site wasn't designed by a human. IMHO, only an alien would be comfortable reading such a blurry, eye piercing, collection of gobbly gook!

That's not bright red and not the usual size seen. Smaller fonts are hard enough to see without them being blurred by bright red over a dark background.

Im not keen on dark styles, whatever the text colour.

I like dark styles as much as white/bright styles but they both have to be nicely tuned to look good. Red font on dark background? Yeah that might look not good for longer chunks of text but for some headers and small elements I guess it could be alright. I also think that blank black background is not looking best. It would look better if it was some kind of dark texture.

I started out with VB for the purpose of building a gaming site. Gaming sites are for some reason most usually always dark.

A fellow designer once told me he thought the reason for gaming sites having dark themes/styles was because most gamers did their gaming at night. This is true in my case so I can't dispute it.

The top two games in the first person shooter category BF3 and COD cast very little white light across your desk. So, an active night of gaming may involve several instances of visiting your favorite gaming site or if you are like many and belong to a gaming clan. Most all gaming clans have web sites and it seems the great majority are dark.

There would be to much eye shock (contrast) coming out of a game just to interact with a gaming site that was light or white. Make sense?
