I keep getting this while trying to install a plugin, some plugins work, some don't. I'm on a new server so the MySQL settings are all fresh so I'm thinking it's timing out and I need too change the time out settings or something, any help on this?

Two things, make sure the max packet size is some what reasonable (4, 8, 16mb) and that the wait_timeout setting is also not too low. should be at least 30~ seconds if not higher.

If this is a dedicated server, you have to SSH into the server and it will be in the /etc directory.

It's usually in..
/etc/mysql/my.cnf
/etc/my.cnf
