Splitting "Whats New"

I have a Forum which is divided into a serious area and a chat area and I have been asked by some members if it's possible to have a separate 'what's new' button for each - so that those who are only interested in serious discussions don't have to wade through piles of dross to find what's new in the main sections.

I can exclude forums and threads from what's new - but I would like to retain the function for ALL forums, but in split sections. Can that be done?
