PNG changed to GIF?
 
How can I prevent PNG avatars thumbnail images from being changed to GIF files?

I use PNG avatars for their obvious benefits (high quality and transparency). The thumbs for the avatars are changed to ugly GIF's and therefore lose the transparency and display of course with white backgrounds.

This is only an issue because I favor my two dark styles and they both have two shades of dark.
