Mod rewrite for username?

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know if it is possible to have a mod so that when a user registers an account, a shortlink is automatically generated?

E.g. http://www.mydomain.co.uk/members/username

or

http://www.mydomain.co.uk/username

Instead of http://www.mydomain.co.uk/member.php?1-Username
