Copy / rip thread from outside forum add on?
 

Hello, this might be a bit of a long shot, but is there any sort of add on that can rip / copy threads from forums that you don't own to forums you do own? There's a lot of cool content online that I'm worried won't be around forever, and I'd like a way to preserve and organize it.

Timestamps, messages, posts etc. would just be copied and generated. Accounts would probably be generated as well, including avatars, join date, signature, etc. Usernames would be the big issue. The accounts would still be generated, there would just have to be a check in order to ensure that the usernames didn't conflict with any of the usernames already on the board. For example, if "Joe" already existed, then it'd need to generate "Joe_1", "then "Joe_2", etc. similar to what happens if you try to download a file with the same name as one you already have. The accounts' private information such as email obviously couldn't be copied, but that's not really important for this.

Does any add on like this already exist? If not would it be possible to create one?

So, which is it you want to do? Copyright infringe or plagiarize? I'm unclear.

I intend to give credit to the original source, so not plagiarism. I'd also avoid sites that ask to be excluded from this sort of thing with robots.txt I'm not a lawyer, but I've seen search engines and archive.org which store cache or copies of other site's pages on their server through an automated method, which is considered fair use. I thought maybe the same concept would apply here. I suppose it'd ultimately be up to a judge to decide whether or not it actually was copyright infringement or fair use.

Of course, if someone wanted their content removed I would remove it, and I really intended this more for private use anyway. So hopefully it would not get to the point where a judge would need to get involved.

This is actually something I'm quite interested in.

I'm rebranding my forum, however I don't want to copy of the entirety of my forum content. I do however want to keep some of the major threads on the new site. Deleting the ones I don't want simply isn't an option as there a tens of thousands of threads.

Are there any solutions to this at all?

@phsycical just through your last few lines of your last post it shows you don't have morals, so i for one would not code anything for you, however there is an rss feature built in to vbulletin an you can rss content from another forum or website to a particlular forum.

You're going to find yourself with many DCMAs against you and ultimately no one will host you if you continue on this route not to mention very poor search engine rankings.
