Automatic Special User Group Join for Kickstarter Backers?
 
I was talking to someone who backs a lot of Kickstarter projects and they said that they are frequently sent vBulletin registration requests for forums associated with the projects they back. He says that when he registers, he's automatically put in a user group just for backers.

He thinks there is some way to have vBulletin check against an email list or something on registration. I figure it's just being done manually, but he say otherwise.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Know how it could be done?
